Artificial reef project advances in Baja California

Tijuana, BC. Baja California will have the first artificial reef in the Mexican North Pacific. To do this, a Navy ship will be sunk off the coast of Playas de Rosarito.

The project is called Rosarito Submarine Park, which has been in the works for five years, says Francisco Javier Ussel Heredia, president of the Baja California Divers Association.

The investment required for this project amounts to nearly 20 million pesos, he comments, including permits, studies and the cost of the boat itself, of which only 7 million are missing to complete it.

“Throughout these five years we have been making progress with donations, like the boat, and to put it into dimensions, we are 7 million away from achieving it,” he says.

The Secretary of the Navy donated the Uribe 121 boat, which is located in the port of Manzanillo and which this weekend was transferred to the port of Ensenada, where it will be docked for the cleaning process.

The opening date has not been defined, but they estimate the sinking of the ship no later than September 2014.

I have also worked to reauthorize the Saving Vanishing Species stamp, which raises funds to protect endangered animals and their habitat at no cost to American taxpayers.

Over the years we have seen that the acts of a few short-sighted, malicious and ambitious people have almost completely destroyed a species. If we act now, we can ensure that the African elephant does not become another sad item on the list of animals we will never be able to recover.
